The ShinyHunters triple breach of Crunchbase, SoundCloud, and Betterment exposes an uncomfortable truth that CISOs cannot afford to ignore: employees will trust security vendors. That trust, when weaponized through sophisticated social engineering, bypasses billions of dollars in security infrastructure.

This is not a story about technical vulnerabilities. No zero-day exploit was used. No sophisticated malware was deployed. No firewall was breached. The attack vector was simpler and far more effective: a phone call from someone claiming to represent Okta, combined with a professionally designed phishing website.

The affected organizations likely had:

The ShinyHunters campaign targeted approximately 100 organizations. Only three refused to pay and had their data published publicly. We don't know how many paid quietly, how many are still being extorted, or how many were breached without detection.

What we do know is that this attack model works. It will be replicated.

When an employee receives a call from "Okta security," the correct response is not paranoia. It's procedure:

"Thank you for calling. Company policy requires me to verify this request through official channels. I'll contact Okta support through our verified number and reference this conversation. What's your ticket number?"

Legitimate vendors will understand and appreciate this diligence. Attackers will hang up and move to an easier target.
